What is a Pastoral Care Programme?
A very common definition states that pastoral care is the provision a school makes to ensure the physical and emotional welfare of students. It is the foundation on which teaching, learning and student progress can take place.
It is linked to:
- the activity of the form tutors at all levels;
- the provision for PSHE / personal development;
- the relation between different departments of a school in order to ensure students’ welfare;
- the communication between form tutors and other members of staff who interact with the students;
- the communication with the parents and care-takers;
- the monitoring of students’ progress in all areas – academic, wellbeing, leadership;
- the communication and collaboration of several adults in the school in order to ensure the welfare of a student – teachers, school counselors, learning support staff, heads of department.
It is a KEY element in the daily activity of a school! It is specific to each school, and directly linked to the vision, mission and the values of a particular educational community. It is a reflection of a school’s ETHOS.
It is TAILORED to the needs and characteristics of each individual school!
